Stephanie Chen of @ohmotherfudger is an egg-loving, multi-talented creative who happens to be one of my dearest friends here in Sunny San Diego. She pours her heart & soul into every project she pursues. From baking to food photography to making puntastic greeting cards, Stephanie brings a detailed eye and hand to her work — and always delivers with a hearty helping of love & silliness.
I had the pleasure of collaborating with Stephanie on developing a logo for her handle @ohmotherfudger — her iconic Instagram account where she shares her beautiful food photography, shots of San Diego’s pop-up food scene, and snaps of her mouth-watering, tea-inspired baked treats. (Oolong milk tea rice crispy treats, anyone? How about some gochujang caramel cookies speckled with gold foil? I’ll take twenty please…)
The process was a fun-filled exploration of Stephanie’s goals, aesthetic style, typography tastes… and preferences for sunny side-up egg splatters. I’m so grateful to Stephanie for trusting me to explore crazy logo concepts with her to create this very fun brand!
From the beginning, Stephanie’s vision for her personal brand was something bold, structured, and statement-making. As you can tell from her handle name, everything we crafted had to be served with a little bit of cheekiness, too.
But perhaps one of the funniest requests of this project was to somehow incorporate egg imagery in the logo. Stephanie LOVES eggs… probably more than anyone I have ever met. And what the client wants, the client gets… maybe? Well, at least in some shape or form or some iterations. So, “egg in logo” was added to the prompt.
To establish the visual direction of the brand strategy, we started with a range of conceptual ideas — some incorporating egg shapes and abstract shapes, others based off of organic shapes of cookies and minimalist takes on camera lenses, others incorporating bright and bold iconography inspired by Asian street signage, others leaning more into elegant typography to speak to Stephanie’s elegant food photography style. However, with a range of interests and talents like Stephanie’s, anything we produced for @ohmotherfudger had to speak more to the tone and vibe of the brand rather than the services. So, we pivoted and narrowed down to iterations focused on egg shapes as the anchoring concept.
To be completely honest, throughout the process, we never really dug that deep into why we should have incorporated the egg into her identity beyond the fact that Stephanie loves them, haha. But the more thought I’ve been giving to it in hindsight, the more it actually makes perfect sense: versatile, bright, energizing, good for the soul, unmistakably recognizable… The culinary staple actually perfectly encapsulates Stephanie’s vibe in a nutshell (or, rather, eggshell, I suppose).
Eclecticism and contrast became the anchoring principles that drove the visual direction of the @ohmotherfudger brand identity. We played with lots of bright, sunny colors and juxtaposed angular, bold edges and lines with soft, organic shapes. A little bit of bold edginess, balanced with playful and bright silliness.
For the primary logo, we landed on a nice, thicc type style as the base, then rounded out the edges of the wordmark to balance out the type’s blocky style with the naturally-rounded edges of her iconic Instagram handle name. Her secondary logo features the aforementioned sunny side-up egg — we made it work! The yolk forms the “O” in the “OMF” abbreviation of “@ohmotherfudger”, with the egg white splatter surrounding the yolk and extending behind the rest of the logo.
This blend of styles reflects Stephanie's approach to creating — she crafts with precision and infuses everything with warmth and playfulness. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the range and talent for a lady who egg-cels at it all!
